This is slightly shorter than the 2020 Tour, which had a distance of 3,470 kilometres. A good idea, when you bet on the Tour de France, is to research how long each Stage is. Certain riders perform better over longer distances than short. Similarly, particular riders suit riding flat surfaces than across the hills. TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 5 BETTING PREVIEW

Stage 5 is a shorter stage with four categorised climbs.
If a breakaway fails to emerge, expect a select group of overall contenders and perhaps a few of the more versatile sprinters to contest the finish. A good 10K of flat roads run between the bottom of the final descent and the finish line in Colmar, so strong descenders will have a big chance.
The gradients of the final couple of climbs are not easy, but also not very hard, not enough to do damage to the GC guys.
KoM leader Tim WellensBetting is a good bet to go on the attack, trying to add to his lead in the hopes of wearing polka dots for at least another day.
Plus, we will not be surprised if overall leader Julian Alaphilippe goes on the attack himself. Greg Van Avermaet could also be in with a shot as well Wout Van Aert and Jasper Stuyven.
Breakaway specialists such as Alessandro De Marchi, Liliane Calmejane, Simon Clarke, Niki Tepstra, Giulio Ciccone, Thomas De Gendt and Oliver Naesen can't be ruled out.
Finally, sprinters with climbing skills could also be a threat, expecially the likes of Peter Sagan, Michael Matthews, Sonny Colbrelli and Caleb Ewan.
Other strong contenders are

TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 5 BETTING PREVIEW

The approach to the final category-one climb features only one categorised ascent coming 50km before the finish (which a breakaway may use to launch a bid for glory), before the last, explosive 6km to the Planche Des Belles Filles where most of the action is likely to occur. It is a relatively new climb that has been used in the race just twice: in 2012 and 2014. Chris Froome and Vincenzo Nibali have won the above mentioned stages, and the riders in Yellow at the top (Wiggins and Nibali) have gone on to claim overall race victory in Paris.
The Planche des Belles Filles climb isn’t long but it’s a brute, rising over 1,000 meters in 5.9km and with a stretch of 20% grade right at the top. It’s there Froome attacked in 2012 to escape to victory.Le tour de france standings
Chris Froome is the obviuos favoruite of this stage as he is the most explosive climber in the peloton. He looked good in the opening TT, and has doubtless improved since the Dauphine.
Richie Porte has shown anything like his best form ahead of the Tour, with his second-place in the Dauphine coming courtesy of a career-best time trial win but he was disappointing in the Stage 1 (the Individual Time Trial) last Saturday.
Nairo Quintana has some seconds to make up after the time trial on day one and we are sure the Colombian will try to make a gap over the other GC contenders.
Fabio Aru looked great in the Dauphine and should be fresh as he has not raced much this season due to injury. Anyway, he prefers high-mountain stages rather than one-climb stages.
Jakob Fuglsang could take advantage of a possible team-work with his team mate Fabio Aru, while Romain Bardet have enough talent - and legs - to make it all by himself.
Thibaut Pinot could be the dark horse, given that rider who are fighting for the Yellow Jersey could control themselves and give the Frenchman enough space to reach the finish line before all other contenders.
Riders like Steve Cummings, Dan Martin, Louis Meintjes and Rafal Majka are capable of a stage victory, but only if attacking early enough.
No chances for the current Yellow Jersey Geraint Thomas, Lilian Calmejane, Pierre Latour, Alberto Contador and Serge Pauwels.
Long shots?
Mikel Landa is likely to help his captain rather that trying to win the stage. Johan Esteban Chaves, Thomas De Gendt and Gianluca Brambilla could be the surprise of the day in case of winning breakaway. Few chances also for Robert Gesink and Simon Yates.
