COSTA BLANCA The first of our four stage jerseys in the 2019 Vuelta collection is dedicated to the Costa Blanca, 200 kilometres of Mediterranean coastline in the Alicante province, on the southeastern coast of Spain. Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) took back the red jersey as leader of the Vuelta a España from main rival Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) on stage 12 of the Spanish Grand Tour on Sunday, with EF Pro Cycling's Hugh Carthy winning the day on the top of the fearsome Alto de l'Angliru ahead of Astana's Aleksandr Vlasov, Movistar's Enric Mas and Carapaz, with Roglič a further 10 seconds back in fifth place on the stage.
Carapaz now leads Roglič by those same 10 seconds overall, while Carthy's solo victory has moved the British climber up to third place overall, a further 22 seconds back, with Israel Start-Up Nation's Dan Martin dropping to fourth, although the Irishman is still just three seconds off a podium position.
Mas retained his fifth place overall, and so keeps hold of the white jersey as best young rider, although Vlasov has edged a little closer, replacing Saturday's stage winner David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) in second place in the competition.
Despite losing the red jersey, Roglič's consistency throughout the race ensures that he maintains a healthy lead in the green points jersey standings, while Guillaume Martin (Cofidis) looks comfortable in the blue-and-white polka-dot jersey at the top of the mountains classification.
Vuelta A Espana White Jerseys
This year's shortened, rescheduled Vuelta got under way in Irun, in the Basque Country, on October 20, and is being run over 18 stages to Madrid, finishing in Spain's capital city on November 8.
Monday is the second of the race's two rest days, with racing recommencing with the Vuelta's sole time trial on Tuesday: a mainly flat, 33.7km individual test for stage 13 from Muros to Mirador de Ezaro, finishing with what is a third-category climb.
